It Takes a Mentor

"Then Moses spoke to the LORD, saying, 'Let the LORD... set a man over the congregation... that the congregation of the LORD may not be like sheep which have no shepard.' And the LORD said to Moses: 'Take Joshua the son of Nun with you, a man in whom is the Spirit.'" Numbers 27:15-18

Joshua was an impressive leader. One of the major factors in Joshua's increase in influence was the impact of Moses on his life. Wherever Moses when, Joshua went with him, whether it was up Mount Sinai or to meet with God in the tabernacle.

After the Hebrews refused to enter the Promised Land, the mentoring relationship between the two men continued. In fact, the process continued for forty years and culminated with Moses imparting his authority to the younger man. And after Moses died, no one questioned Joshua's leadership.

Paster A. W. Tozer said, "God is looking for people through whom He can do the impossible - what a pity that we plan only the things we can do by ourselves." Moses' investment in Joshua released God's power in him.

I was at the A/CCF chairs meeting at AFC this weekend and had the opportunity to speak with a number of the chairs of CCFs across Ontario. We shared about our successes and prayer items, but one thing that stuck out was our desire to "find a successor". Everyone was chatting about it, and it came down to this: Find a select few in your CCF, and start mentoring right now.

A couple of things:

1. If you want to be a mentor or a mentee, let us (committee) know. If you're an older / more mature guy, it'd be great if you take on a mentorship role with one of the froshies or second years.

2. Mentorship is one of the v5's (5 things we are focusing on this year). While we haven't rolled it out in a coporate, macro level, I hope this is something we can touch upon soon.

Now I'm not gonna lie, I see a lot of potential in you guys. As Chair I feel strongly in giving everyone an opportunity to develop into leaders so that at the end of the year, EVERYONE can be a potential candidate for Chairing next year's CCF.

And like the scripture says, it's all about mentoring. I don't claim to have all the tools to equip everyone in becoming a potential leader, but if we all learn from one another I think it'll be a good start.

So... long story short, I encourage the old people to take the initiative to mentor the "younger" ones. And 1st-3rd years, start thinking about stepping up and aiming to being Chair.

What do you guys think? Thoughts on the scripture or this whole mentorship in general?

p.s., We should probably discuss a formal mentorship thing during MG this thursday.

NO WAY.

On the way to school this morning, I was listening to..some preacher..on 99.5 FM, and he was talking about mentorship, too! The preacher was saying that you should look for someone who's qualities you admire, and that you can see as taking on as your own. It was pretty cool, because I am looking for a mentor right now. :)

It is pretty cool how many parallels you can draw with Moses and Joshua. It kind of highlights their relationship and the passing on of the torch of leadership (similar to the autobot matrix of leadership, Transfomers (1985)).

While mentoring is important and i fully support it. One thing that keeps popping into my mind is, we ALL need to be mentored, even the mentoree-r thing...

never let yourself be satisfied with where you are and think you are above someone else on the ladder of mentorship. Its something i find myself falling into.

I want to stay a child, and be mentored forever, while helping out mentoring someone else. But as a child you can't mentor someone else.

paradox much?

CRACKLE POP YO!

Never lose the urge to be mentored.

I WANNA BE MENTORED SOMEONE MENTOR ME! RAWR!

I like how this devo shows the importance of mentorship in our walk with God and also in the needs of our CCF.

I believe that there are fellas in our CCF that can definitely play the role of a mentor. I believe that even tho we may all lack the tools or may not have the best track record to be a mentor, to be a mentor is about your heart and effort. And if you're willing to spend the time, pray for one another and push one another... as long as you're dedicated for His will, I believe you can definitely be a mentor. I can see us drawing strength from one another, let's do this.

I've also wanted a mentor. and i LOL very hard at rich's Transformers analogy. I've mentioned it before in various places and scenarios, I think we really should push for some tri mentoring thing. It would help all of us, keep us accountable and such. and as well create some potential leaders and stuff.
